February seems as if it came as quickly as it left. Today I’m going to share some of my February must reads 2024, despite it being March. I just couldn’t find time to sit down and get to typing.
Tis’ the season for baby farm animals and the beginning of gardening season around our little farm, so my days of getting lost in a book are starting to dwindle. However with the snow and the cold, and some extra quiet family time this February I had the time to fill my mind with all the books I could.
I recently was in Reno, which I rarely go to, city life isn’t for this slow town girl. However I found a fabulous little bookstore filled with all the things that I needed to take home with me. I love a good used bookstore, surrounded by books cherished by others is a place that I could spend my afternoons in.
Unfortunately in our little town, I have yet to find a used bookstore that rivals the used bookstores of my previous travels until I stumbled into this hidden gem in The Biggest Little City.
California is a lot of things, but a secret treasure trove of used bookstores is something most probably don’t know about it and something I can legitimately say I actually miss about California.
Let’s chat books shall we?
The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris
Based on a true story of love and survival this book will keep you turning the pages and pondering it long after you’ve finished. My heart mourned for the atrocities of the Holocaust, but I found beauty in this love story, and the endurance and will to survive unimaginable circumstances was so beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time. This is one you must read no matter how many stories you’ve read on the Holocaust, you won’t be disappointed. Heather Morris is an excellent author with the ability to hold the reader captive, and leave you pondering long after you’ve set the book down.
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
I can see why this has received so many positive accolades. This is one of the best books I’ve read by Kristin Hannah, based in Alaska in 1974. I don’t just happen to love it because I love everything about the 1970’s, but I found myself sucked in from the very beginning.
A pretty lengthy read, it took me but a couple days to finish because I was that lost in what would happen next. The characters are easy to fall in love with despite the struggles of a family damaged from the Vietnam War.
Kristin Hannah is an excellent story teller, and draws you in with the drama of a broken family, their struggles to survive the harsh, unforgiving conditions of Alaska while living off the grid.
Anyways I won’t over share you have to read it for yourself, definitely a favorite I’ve read this year.
Mother Nature By Jedidiah Jenkins
So my husband recently suggested I visit our local library because of my love and obsession with reading. It was getting to be a bit ridiculous all the books I’ve had delivered lately, so I made a trip to our public library and stumbled upon this gem in the new release section.
This story is one close to my heart, I fell in love with the author’s voice from the beginning. I don’t know a book I’ve honestly ever laughed out loud at until this one. Jedidiah Jenkins has a unique voice and ability to look at life from a different perspective. Not letting politics, or religion divide the love between him and his mother.
A story based on his relationship with his conservative Christian mother as a gay, agnostic, democratic man, and their unconditional love for one another despite their differences causing a stumbling block in their relationship. His ability to not only laugh at himself and his mother made me laugh out loud.
Told from his perspective, it’s quite comical, sweet, and feels as if a friend is telling you a story.
We live in such a heightened political time, this author has the unique gift to draw the reader in and laugh at both political parties, all the while acknowledging that both have an opinion and voice, and that’s okay to disagree.
Anyways you have to read it for yourself, but I’d say this is my favorite book I’ve read in 2024.
These are just a few of my favorite reads from the last month.
I’m trying to squeeze in as many extra books as I can before things start to get really busy around here.
A little homestead update our first mama goat Joy, gave birth to twins, Jack and Holly! Two sweet, milk drunk goat kids.
Surround me with all the babies!
Spring is one of my favorite seasons around the homestead because of all the new life. From flowers emerging, to animals being born, to warmer days, spring is near and I’m so excited for all the things we have going on here.
Thankful to the Lord for all his blessings in 2024 so far.
Tell me have you read anything great lately?
What is your favorite thing about spring?
Happy Reading!
Danielle
