Favorite Read From February

Well I must have blinked, and it’s already March. However I didn’t quite get around to sharing my latest favorite read from this past month, I admittedly devoured in 3 days. It’s almost a bit outrageous how lost I can get in a good book, and I assure you this one is easy to get lost in.

It’s almost planting and kidding season around here which means less time to lose myself in a good book. I’m currently using all this snow as an excuse to devour as many books as possible before Spring hits.

Now onto my favorite read from February!

One For The Blackbird One For The Crow

Olivia Hawker

What It’s About

Set in Wyoming in 1876, an intriguing story about two families faced with heartbreak and tragedy, relying on one another despite their differences for survival. Set in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, the Weber and Bemis Family are met with a decision to make if they are going to survive the long, cold winters of Wyoming. If you are interested I’ll let you check it out for yourself and decide if it’s a read for you.

The author has a way of captivating the reader, drawing the reader deep within the story. I found myself setting limits on my daily reading in order to accomplish other tasks throughout the day. A slower story filled with such detail, leaving you to ponder the story long after it’s finished. Olivia Hawker weaves a beautiful story from beginning to end.

Her writing is so beautiful and has such a way with words that I would say many authors nowadays truly lack. I love words, and can get lost in a beautifully written sentence. If you love literary fiction, this is a book for you. The author has the ability to drag the reader right into the landscape and era, leaving the reader lost (in a good way) in the imagery of the farm, the mountains, the drama unfolding.

If you are more of a fast paced adventure book reader I’d say this one might not be for you. Although I imagine any avid reader can appreciate an elegant writer when they find one.

What Annoyed Me?

The italics, I rarely wear glasses to read, but found I had to pull out the old spectacles, aka my magnifying glass to read the italicized chapters. That was a bit of a drag, but didn’t stop me from loving the book anyways.

I really love a large variety of books to read, but I find that this book provided a really interesting look at life in the West during the 1800’s. Imagining how tough life on the frontier would be on a farm in the middle of nowhere Wyoming. I love that the author used real life relatives with her own spin to create a believable fictional story.

Tell me what have you read this past month that you couldn’t put down?

Have you read any books by Olivia Hawker?

Happy Reading!

  1. If I don’t have my nose in the Beekeeping for Dummies book, I’ve been loving Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches series. I started watching the show on AMC and decided TV couldn’t do Anne Rice justice!
