Urban Organic Seed Club

A little fact about me is I love seeds, but I also love receiving little packages in the mail.

Last month as a little gift to self, I joined the Urban Organic Seed Club, and as nerdy as I may seem, I was thrilled to get surprise seeds in the mail I had completely forgotten about my gift.

I have tried so many different companies to provide me with the seeds for my gardens, and I’ve always been bummed by the quality or lack of germination. I’ve tried Baker Creek, Seed Savers Exchange, but I’ve fallen in love with seedsnow.com for their variety of seeds, their germination rate, and the customer service. I love that I am able to harvest my own seeds from the plants grown. Cutting my seed purchasing costs each year. Self-sufficiency, less government dependency is the goal.

I was so excited to see that they offer an Organic Seed Club, with monthly seeds sent to your door. A little surprise package, filled with non-GMO, organic heirloom seeds specific to my gardening needs. They do not pay me to write this I am just that seed geeky, and hope, rather than purchasing your seeds from your local Home Depot you’d opt for more organic seeds instead.

With a variety of options for your monthly desires, I opted for the $20 a month package paid for in advance due to my disdain for monthly deductions. The $20 package includes 5 heirloom seed varieties, seed starting pods, and planting markers. It isn’t anything extravagant, but it’s piece of my month I get excited about.

When you opt-in for the Seed Club, you provide the information for your gardening needs, zone, likes and dislikes, giving you a customized delivery right to your mailbox. This also makes for a wonderful gift for your friends and family that love to garden.

My first delivery was filled with varieties that I didn’t even see on their website, merely because they have such an array of seeds offered.

What Seeds Came In the First Package?

  1. Black Beauty Eggplant, an eggplant with excellent yields of purple eggplants in the shape of a tear drop. A memory of my great-grandparents farm includes eating fried eggplant each summer, a memory I adore, but also hope to mimic this coming summer.
  2. Red Cherry Tomato, an easy tomato plant to grow with high yields of small red tomatoes this is a must have tomato to grow for endless Caprese Salads.
  3. Green Flesh Honeydew, a delicious melon with sweet green flesh due to it’s long growing season this is one that I will start in pots in the greenhouse long before our last freeze.
  4. Santa Fe Grande Pepper, this super spicy high yielding pepper is going to be for a good friend of ours who lives to eat the spiciest items on the menu.
  5. Charleston Wakefield Cabbage, a popular cabbage that I have yet to grow in my garden I’m excited for these 4lb beauties, with anti-inflammatory properties to grow in our cooler Spring season.

I have yet to try the seed starting medium pods provided, but I’m curious to see how they do.

If you like me love all things seeds, I’d recommend you look into the Urban Organic Gardener Seed Club, it’s a little gem to open each month for minimal cost, enhancing your growing abilities as well as your knowledge about the seemingly endless varieties of plants that exist. Realistically I probably do not need anymore seeds, but I do love finding new varieties to try each year hopefully increasing our sustainability with each little seed.

Maybe you already have your favorite seed companies to choose from, maybe not, if you are on the hunt for an organic, non-GMO seed supplier, I’d encourage you to look into seedsnow.com, I’ve never been disappointed with their seed quality.

What is the item in your garden you are most excited for this year?

It’s hard to choose which item I’m most excited for this summer growing season, but I think it’s all of our fruit trees and berry bushes!

Happy Planting!

Danielle
